Today I’m here to share my expertise with you on creating art that both feeds your soul and your family. One of the questions I often get asked by my audience is whether they should be niching down and selecting repeat pattern design niches, or if they should be branching out and creating all kinds of different things. Well, in this video, I’m here to share my experience with different niches and offer my advice on the subject.

As a pattern designer, textile designer, and surface pattern designer for close to 14 years, and with my experience as a children’s book illustrator, I have a lot of knowledge to share. I strongly believe that niching down really works, and I’ll explain why.

When I first started out, I did everything I could figure out. I did sketches, drawings, paintings, and I recommend that you do the same. Get your hands on all kinds of art mediums and experiences, whether digital or traditional. I recommend starting with digital because it will help you get a good hang of it if you want to be a digital repeat designer. However, even when you’re just starting out, it’s also a good idea to concentrate your effort on repeat pattern design.

How to select your repeat pattern graphic design niches.

While you’re practicing your drawing skills and design skills in all kinds of different areas, I recommend that you start creating and posting for sale your repeat pattern designs. Repeat pattern designs are already a niche – a type of graphic design that’s in high demand for manufacturing all kinds of products. So by choosing repeat pattern designs, you’re already niching down.

If you’re still worried about niches, my advice is to calm down – you’re already in a very narrow, specific niche. And if you’re thinking about niching down even further within your niche, the key is to see what sells. Start creating in the topics that you see people using repeat pattern designs on. Look at products in stores and see what patterns are used on them. For example, you’ll often find repeat pattern designs on kitchen items, home decor, clothing, toys, etc.

However, there are also style niches within repeat pattern design. For example, black and white scribble drawings for a child’s bedroom, or very soft and airy pink and purple glittery designs, are all different niches because they look very different, even though the topic is the same. There is no one particular niche that I can recommend for you because you will have your own style and inclinations. Some people love designing for children, while others prefer edgier designs that are not for children.

What I recommend is to experiment, post your designs for sale, and see what feedback you get. Pay attention to which designs are selling and try to create more in that style.

To help you, I’ve created an online course called “Pattern Power Prompts” where I lay out all 12 topics that have worked very well for me in my experience. However, I show all kinds of different styles because I understand that your style will differ from mine, and that’s a good thing. Never copy other people’s style or designs.

So, if you’re still feeling confused about which topics to pick, I invite you to check out my “Pattern Power Prompts” online course. It’s a great way to get inspired and find your own niche within the world of repeat pattern design.

Thank you for watching, and I hope this video was helpful.
