What is textile design?

Textile design is a form of design when you develop artwork and design for fabric. It is a part of a larger graphic design direction called surface pattern design. Here is my video about the different types of textile design:

What are vector repeat patterns?

These are digital pattern designs that are created in vector design software in special formats (usually .ai or .eps) that once opened in a vector graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator CC, can be scaled up or down almost endlessly without the loss of quality of the image. Unlike raster designs (files such as JPG or PNG) that are loosing quality when scaled up. Here is my video about the difference between vector and raster files.

_____

Is only Adobe Illustrator needed for vector repeat pattern design? Can I use other free software?

I know that Adobe Illustrator CC software is an investment, but this is the industry-standard tool that all of my design clients requested because of the end files needed for the manufacturing process. I suggest if you can afford it,  staring directly in Adobe Illustrator so that you don’t waste time on the software that you will have to switch over to Illustrator anyway sooner or later.

Here is my video about the Adobe Illustrator benefits.

Do I need a graphic tablet to design vector patterns? Can I start without it?

You can start without a graphic tablet and create elements using Pen Tool and Shape Tools (circle, star, etc.) until you get more confident with pattern design. The tablet really helps in the long run, especially if you like to draw by hand.
A graphic tablet is very useful, though, so here are a few suggestions on how to get it cheaper. Since you are just starting out, I would recommend cheaper Wacom model, Wacom Bamboo small (referral link) I started out with a Bamboo and had it for 2 years. It worked well. I haven’t tried this newer model, though. You can also try finding Wacom Intuos Medium (referral link) already used. That’s the one I have now and I love it.

______

How can I start selling my vector repeat pattern designs online?

There are a few tested methods how to license your designs online using microstock and print-on-demand websites. Here is my free webinar recording with lots of helpful tips and the list of main websites for you to consider. And here is the bonus PDF that goes with this webinar. Hope you find it helpful!

______

Can I sell only raster (created in Photoshop or scanned) patterns instead of learning to make vector patterns?

Yes, you can sell only raster designs on print-on-demand websites like Spoonflower BUT I have tested the performance of raster vs vector on various websites and vectors win 10 times.
You need vector artwork saved as EPS files to sell vector pattern designs on microstock websites, which are the bulk of my earnings. Vector artwork sells 10x better on microstocks. I tested both for 5+ years.
Vector patterns sell better because the manufacturers all over the world need vector files EPS for their fabric and other surfaces manufacturing process. If you need to create a line of handbags or clothing and contact a manufacturing company, you will most likely be asked for VECTOR graphics to do it.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.

______

Can I just sell my designs through you, Oksancia? 🙂

Sorry, but I am not selling other people’s artwork and designs, only created in my own design studio. I am also not hiring new designers at the moment.
I am teaching how to build your own textile design business, and work for yourself, if you are interested. Please see this page for helpful links on how to start selling on your own.

______

I am not good at drawing. Can I still design repeat patterns?

Yes, you can focus on geometric and abstract pattern styles if you want to start out and learn the pattern design system first, and then start practicing drawing weekly so that you can try hand-drawn styles more and more of you wish. Abstract and geometric styles are some of my good sellers. Here is my video with more on this.

Also, here is my other video where I show how to use geometric shapes in Adobe Illustrator to build more interesting shapes for repeat pattern design.

______

I am a self-taught artist. Can I become a textile designer without a traditional art or design degree?

Yes, you absolutely can if you study, practice, and work hard on it. How do I now? Because I am myself a self-taught artist and designer 🙂 Here is my video for self-taught artists to overcome their beginner block and another video on how to get started as a self-taught designer. Hope you find support and inspiration in them. Good luck!
