Which software to use for repeat pattern design? The difference between raster and vector software.

One of my subscribers, Maria asked which software I recommend for repeat pattern design.

As a textile designer with 11 years of experience, I get a lot of questions just like this one, so I wanted to share my personal opinion on why I choose certain software over others.

There are two different types of software for repeat pattern design, professional and less professional. The professional software includes Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Both programs are great for creating repeat patterns, but I personally prefer Illustrator because it’s a vector illustration program. This means that when you zoom in on your design, you won’t see any pixel dots, and your artwork will be smooth and scalable to any size. Illustrator is perfect for creating flat artwork with simple, ink-like drawings, but if you’re more into watercolors or traditional media, then Photoshop might be a better fit for you.

The second type of software is free or less professional, including apps like Inkscape and iPad or Android pattern creation tools. I personally don’t use these apps because I want my artwork to be ready for professional pattern design and to be able to sell it online or license it later on. However, these apps can be a good option if you’re just sketching on the go.

In conclusion, the software you choose for repeat pattern design will depend on your personal style and goals for your artwork. If you prefer flat, digital artwork, then Illustrator is the way to go. If you’re into watercolors or traditional media, then Photoshop might be a better choice.
