Top 5 Habits of Successful Repeat Pattern Designers.
As a textile designer with over 15 years of experience, I’ve seen it all when it comes to repeat pattern design. I’ve been through the ups and downs, the successes and the failures, and I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to make it in this industry. In this blog post, I want to share with you my top five habits of successful repeat pattern designers, based on my personal experience and observations.
Habit 1: Checking Your Work
The first habit of successful repeat pattern designers is to thoroughly check their work. This means checking not just the visual aspects of the design, but also the technical elements. For example, you need to make sure that the repeat is technically correct, that all the colors work well together, and that the design will print correctly. If you’re working in a vector program like Adobe Illustrator, it’s also important to make sure that your file is set up correctly and that all elements are grouped and repeating in the right way. This habit is crucial to making sure that your customers will be able to use your designs in a way that works for them, whether it’s for printing or manufacturing.
Habit 2: Keeping a List of Ideas
The second habit of successful repeat pattern designers is to keep a running list of ideas for their designs and pattern collections. Whether you’re out in the world and you see a beautiful flower that you want to capture, or you have a sudden spark of inspiration, it’s important to have a place to keep track of all of your ideas. I personally use Trello, but you could also use Evernote or Google Docs. The key here is to have a centralized place where you can store your ideas and access them from anywhere, at any time.
Habit 3: Thinking Strategically
The third habit of successful repeat pattern designers is to think strategically about their designs. This means considering not just the creative aspects, but also the commercial potential of each design. For example, you might want to think about the different ways you can license your designs, or the types of products they might work well on. By thinking strategically, you can optimize your creative business for income and make sure that each design you create is a valuable asset to your portfolio.
Habit 4: Staying Organized
The fourth habit of successful repeat pattern designers is to stay organized. This means having a system in place for managing your projects, files, and client interactions. Whether you use project management software, a physical file system, or a combination of both, having a way to keep track of everything will help you stay on top of your work and make the most of your time and energy.
Habit 5: Continuously Learning and Improving
The final habit of successful repeat pattern designers is to continuously learn and improve. This means taking courses, attending workshops, and reading books and articles to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques. By continuously learning and improving, you’ll be able to push the boundaries of what’s possible with repeat pattern design and stay ahead of the curve.
In conclusion, these are my top five habits of successful repeat pattern designers. While this list is by no means exhaustive, I believe that these habits can make a big difference in your own creative work and business. By implementing them in your own life and work, you can take your repeat pattern design skills to the next level and create designs that stand out from the crowd.
Thank you so much for watching!
Grow, love, and create.
