In this video, I talk about my experience and advice for being a prolific designer based on how I created my 5000 vector pattern portfolio. I created more than 5000 repeat pattern designs over 10 years. Here are my tips on how to grow your portfolio faster:

1) I created consistently. Every week by the end of the week I had to create 10 vector patterns.

2) I planned out ideas beforehand and worked on them one-by-one so that I don’t have to have “designer’s block” and not know what to work on when the time comes to create my patterns.

3) I learned and created myself the tools and systems to speed up pattern creation process like Adobe Illustrator scripts, actions, templates.

If you find yourself repeating a task over and over like saving something, scaling it up or down, or a whole series of steps you take every time you make a pattern design, look for ways to automate it and make it faster next time. This investment of your time and effort will pay off in the future.

“Building a Thriving Repeat Pattern Design Portfolio: My Journey and Tips”

It all started nine years ago, when I had zero repeat pattern designs. But with consistency and hard work, I was able to create close to 5000 repeat pattern designs and over 10,000 vector files that are now available for licensing, bringing me a full-time income every month. I am so grateful for this opportunity and I believe this is an important lesson to share with all of you.

Here are my top three tips on how to build your creative portfolio faster and become a prolific designer:

• Consistency is Key: My goal is to create 10 repeat pattern designs each week, and I aim to achieve this goal 90% of the time. To maintain consistency, I have a specific day each week dedicated to creating my pattern designs and uploading them to the websites where I license them. If I miss a day, I make sure to catch up by the end of the week.

•  Create a System: I highly recommend creating a specific system for yourself to automate the process and save time. This could include using Adobe Illustrator scripts, templates, and actions. I have shared some of my systems and helpful resources on my website and YouTube channel.

• Plan Ahead: I plan out the topics for my designs beforehand, using tools like Trello or Google Sheets. This helps me to organize my work and utilize seasonality, such as creating Christmas designs three to four months before the actual season.

By following these tips, I was able to grow my repeat pattern portfolio to five or even ten thousand patterns. I hope these tips will help you achieve your creative goals and I can’t wait to see your progress!
