Why do you need a license for using repeat pattern or other types of artwork for manufacturing commercial products?
A license is a legal practice to protect you, your business and the creator of the artwork. It is stated in the contract signed by both parties.
So let’s get started. There are many types of artwork licenses, but these two are the most important for you as a product manufacturer:
Exclusive and non-exclusive art license
Exclusive license:
Only you and you alone (licensee) will be able to use this artwork for the manufacturing of your products for sale and using it in your promotional purposes.
You cannot resell the rights to the artwork or give it away for free online.
An exclusive license can be time bound. For example, you can purchase an exclusive license for 3 years.
Non-Exclusive License:
You receive the right to use this repeat pattern or another type of artwork for manufacturing your products for sale and using it in your promotional purposes, but the artist can license it to other people at the same time too. Artist can also manufacture his or her own products using this artwork.
To sum up
This is my short explanation of the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive licenses for licensing vector repeating pattern or other types of artwork for your commercial products and merchandise for sale.
