Can I sell one pattern design on multiple websites? How to sell art online.
In this video, I talk about if you can sell one and the same repeat pattern design or other digital artwork online on multiple websites. I also discuss my own 11+ years of experience selling my vector repeat pattern designs on multiple websites as well as being an exclusive designer on one website for a few years before I switched back to multiple microstock and print-on-demand websites.
I also speak about the difference between an exclusive license and a non-exclusive license in licensing digital art and designs online.
Here is a question I get often: Can I sell my repeat pattern designs on multiple websites?
Yes, you can and should if you want to optimize your licensing income and gain exposure for your potential client projects.
I license my vector repeat pattern designs via around 12 websites online for 11 years now and have created a steady stream of passive income as well as a steady stream of new clients.
I have a video about all of these websites:
Webinar: On Which Websites Can You Successfully Sell Your Repeat Pattern Designs? My experience. There is also a BONUS PDF list of all website links.
I also have experience of being an exclusive designer via a website that is called iStockphoto for 3 years and it worked well for a while until the owners changed and it stopped working. So I switched back to a multiple website model and I really enjoy it now.
I have a specific system of how I upload so many patterns to so many websites which I teach specifically in my Pattern It Up online course, but you can also start with a few websites for free and upload using their websites or FTP uploaders, which I have never personally used.
To sum up, I have had a great experience selling my vector repeat pattern designs on multiple websites so I definitely recommend that you check them out and I hope they will work well for you.

Can I sell the same repeat pattern or other digital artwork on multiple websites online?
I’ve been creating repeat patterns in Adobe Illustrator for over 11 years now, and I started selling them on 3 different websites within a few weeks of starting. To my delight, I started getting sales and results almost immediately. Encouraged by this, I signed up for as many websites as I could, but eventually had to scale back because some of the websites were not selling very well (especially the ones focusing on stock photos).
However, over time, I was able to sign up for at least 12 different websites where my repeat pattern designs are for sale until today, even the oldest ones from 11 years ago are still selling!
One of the main benefits of reselling on multiple websites is that your artwork can reach different audiences and orders on different websites. Another major benefit is that if one website goes down, you will still have multiple other websites to rely on for your monthly income from the same patterns that you created.
I was an exclusive designer on one of the websites, iStockphoto, for a while. Being exclusive meant that I could only sell my designs on that website, but I was not locked into it and could create other patterns for my freelance customers and sell on print-on-demand services like Redbubble. Unfortunately, this website stopped working after the ownership changed, and I had to switch back to a non-exclusive agreement with them. This serves as a reminder that diversifying your portfolio of images across different websites is crucial, just like how investors diversify their portfolio.
It is also important to note that you can sell your repeat patterns on other platforms like microstocks, and you can sell to a specific person who comes to you and wants your pattern for a particular purpose, like for children’s clothing.
As long as you have not signed an exclusive license on a particular website, you are normally free to sell your designs to other people. However, it’s always a good idea to check your legal agreements to make sure.
In another video of mine, called “Webinar: On Which Websites Can I Sell My Repeat Patterns Successfully”, I have listed all the websites I sell on, along with their specifications and recommendations for starting. There is also a PDF inside the blog post on my website with links to all the websites where you can sell your designs.
In conclusion, selling the same repeat pattern or other digital artwork on multiple websites online can bring multiple benefits and is a great way to reach different audiences and orders. However, it is crucial to diversify your portfolio of images across different websites and to always check the legal agreements before signing up for any website.
I hope my experience and lessons learned will help you get started on your journey to selling your digital artwork online. Happy selling!
