HOW TO ANALYZE YOUR PATTERN DESIGN PORTFOLIO SHOP: WHAT’S WORKING, WHAT’S NOT!
If you are wondering which pattern designs or artwork are working in your online microstock portfolio or your online shop, then this video is for you. You are probably seeing some sales come in or even a steady stream of sales but without the regular design portfolio analysis it will be hard to know which design topics work best for you and which style is the most popular with your customers.
I developed a special design business exercise that helps me to keep track of my vector pattern portfolio sales in my Shutterstock (my referral link, thank you for your support!) and other microstock shops. I share this exercise with you in this video. I hope you find help with your own microstock shop analysis as well as other online shops you are selling on, for example, print-on-demand shops.
Here is a tip on how to create illustrations and designs that sell better and better and improve the quality of your portfolio over time.
I suggest that every month you review your online shops on every main website and record what has been selling for you. You can make screenshots on your computer and collect them in one place to quickly review the previous months. I like to use free tools like Evernote or Trello for my reviews with screenshots.
Take notes of what you notice. You can also write down what is popular on the main websites for ideas.
Schedule these reviews in your Calendar with the reminder to your phone or email.
After a few months, you will start seeing patterns of what sells, which topics and styles do well, and what your customers like.
Now create more patterns using the same elements and similar colors on the same topic. Or keep the topic, but change the style or draw new elements for it. I call these “experiments”. I suggest 20 patterns per experiment.
The rest of the month, create new topics and try new ideas and styles.
During the next month review and note again what has been selling and on which website. Rinse and repeat. Over time you will gain a great understanding of what topics and styles are selling for you and also what you like to create yourself.
After you adopt this monthly and weekly practice, you will have a much better understanding of repeat pattern marketing online and will create a better plan for your future pattern collections.

Should I rework old designs that haven’t sold or just concentrate on what is selling and new designs?
I found better luck with concentrating on what is selling. If you really like some of your old designs, you can, of course, try creating a new take on them.
