How I Grew My Textile Design Business By 200x In 2 Years – Video

Here is a story of my textile design and repeat pattern business and what I learned in the process…

My name is Oksana. I am an artist, textile designer and a creative soul.

Up to this point I created more than 5000 vector repeat patterns and worked on more than 50 freelance surface pattern design projects.

I created my first pattern ever in 2010 and it has changed my life forever. Before this happened, I was creating vector illustrations approximately once per week for my microstock online galleries, where they could be licensed. One day in 2010 I told my husband Alex that I really liked repeat pattern designs and wanted to make them in vector, but the technical process of creating them was very time consuming and long. So Alex told me “Let’s figure it out together!” and we did! We put our heads together and came up with a system that made the technical side of creating repeat patterns very easy and fast for me. We improved the system over the years, but that day we made a simple pattern. Here it is. I was so excited to use it somehow that I made this illustration. One of my personal favorites till this day.

One year later, I have created over 1000 repeat patterns and borders and the revenue from my microstock business grew 80 times in one year. The following year we reached 200x the revenue of my original microstock business. You might say that it all started from that first pattern, but what I learned in 6 years since that day, is that it started from an idea and the fact that me and my husband came together and collaborated. That was one of the best, exciting times in our lives together.

I realized that I have a vision for patterns and artwork that speak to people and inspire them. But the power comes in collaboration with other amazing, creative people. This is what my customers have taught me so much through our common design projects.
If you have a product or a vision for a product that will impact people’s lives for better, I would be honored to collaborate with you and create unique, amazing artwork specifically for your products based on my creative vision and more that 8 years of experience in art and design. Please email me and let’s talk about your products and how we can make creative, meaningful magic happen together…

Client Testimonial: Shamsiah From Hessa Bags.

Hessa Bags is a manufacturer of Islamic handbags bags which are not only beautiful and practical, but meaningful too. They are based in Malaysia and has been my client since July 2015. I am very grateful to Shamsiah, the founder and owner of the company, who has been so kind as to write a review about our work together.

Here is what Shamsiah writes:

“I first discovered Oksancia’s work on Spoonflower and subsequently on Shutterstock. At the time I was looking for an illustrator to help translate my ideas into beautiful patterns for my handbag business, and also to offer their views and ideas on what will and won’t work. Her work to me is clean yet meticulous, and although there is a wide variety in her work, they are all beautiful.
I loved working with Oksancia, she was quick to understand my (jumbled and sometimes vague!) ideas and voila, magically produce patterns which require just a few tiny tweaks here and there.
I highly recommend anyone looking for an illustrator to contact her. I personally can’t wait to collaborate with her again, hopefully sooner rather than later!”

Client Testimonial: Sarah From Cari Slings. Fabric Design Case Study

I am feeling honored to hear from my amazing client Sarah – the founder of Cari Slings woven babywearing wraps company based in North Carolina, USA. She was so kind to write down her feedback on our experience of working together for 1.5 years. Sarah is a mom of three beautiful children, a babywearing enthusiast, and a passionate geek, which translates into her esthetic and choice of topics for her company’s products – USA woven babywearing slings.

Sarah writes:

“When Cari Slings was still in its infancy, I was primarily using mill stock designs. I was very happy with our original designs, but I felt the need to start searching for designers that connected a bit more with my aesthetic.

I stumbled upon a beautiful underwater design by Oksana late one night and loved her work immediately. I found the designer’s name and site and perused her website. I loved everything that I saw, and contacted Oksana enquiring if she would be interested in collaborating with me. She responded and let me know that she had recently given birth and was taking a little bit of time to spend with her family, and asked if I could get back in touch with her in a month or two. I did not hesitate to follow up, and upon getting back in touch, we worked out the details and she took my simple ideas and turned them into a beautiful Under The Sea design.

Since that first project, Oksana and I have collaborated further and she has produced some very fun and beautiful designs for Cari Slings. She has created our Owl Post (http://www.carislings.com/chapters/Owl-Post), Neverending (http://www.carislings.com/chapters/Neverending), The ‘Verse (http://www.carislings.com/chapters/the-verse), #solidarity (a Facebook group exclusive design), our Avatar inspired design (another Facebook group exclusive) and a few more designs that are still “under wraps”.

Oksana is a truly gifted artist. She is an absolute pleasure to work with. When we collaborate on an idea, we brainstorm different concepts, I let Oksana know what I would like, and within a few days, she provides me with a first draft design that always exceeds my expectations. Her artistry translates onto our woven fabric beautifully, and my customers and myself are always so thrilled.

If one is looking for an artist who puts her heart into her work, and if one is looking for a designer who will not just meet, but exceed your expectations, please do not hesitant to get in touch with Oksana. I cannot sing her praises enough. Her work speaks for itself.

Thank you kindly Oksana. :)”

Thank you so much for such a great feedback. I loved our time working together too! It’s been filled with wonderful, creative assignments and I really enjoyed the process of working together to bring your and your customer’s ideas to life on special, custom and uniques fabric designs.

Here is the story :) Our creative journey with Sarah started with this Under The Sea design in 2014 which is now available in an array of colors and fabric choices:

Since then Sarah and I collaborated on 9 more designs like the Owl Post fabric design inspired by the world of Harry Potter:

So excited! Origany children’s clothing line with my designs!

Greetings, friends! Life has been happy, busy and interesting with a new baby around here :) I haven’t been posting in a while, but today I finally have a minute to share something very exciting with you. A while back I was contacted by Origany – organic children’s clothing company based in San Francisco – to design a fabric for one of their spring lines. It was very exciting to work with them on a birds and flowers inspired design with an Oriental vibe. Here is the final artwork they chose:

This is a fabric design I did in vector with Origany’s custom colors and here is a t-shirt print with the bird and blossoms:

The line consists of a onesie, long sleeved shirts, a couple of cute dresses, pants and hats.

I like them all but my favorite one is this kimono dress design with purple and coral panels and bows. Adorable! I got one for Olivia, of course ;)

It is such a great feeling to see my designs on kids’ clothes! I hope there are more opportunities like this in the future.

Can’t wait till baby Olivia is old enough to wear her Origany kimono dress and t-shirt :)

Exciting Things: Another Sneak Peek Of My New Project

This spring is being a busy one for me :) But “good busy”. Just finished the first project in, hopefully, a series and it is a very exciting one. I can’t tell you more at the moment, but here is a little preview of two characters – two adventurous, little buddies…

I hope you too are having a productive week!
