How To Organize Repeat Pattern Files Or Other Artwork Files On Your Computer – Guide and bonus PDF.

How To Organize Repeat Pattern Files Or Other Artwork On Your Computer - Guide by Oksancia

I received two requests on my YouTube Channel to talk about my pattern file organization system, so I decided to show you, my creative friends, how to organize repeat pattern files or other artwork files on your computer. This is the system that I created 10 years ago and it stood the test of time very well.

It’s very important to think through and plan out your repeat pattern or artwork organization system as soon as possible because after a while you will be struggling to find your files and, if you decide to join a new website or upload to a new agency, you will find it hard to save new versions of files needed for them without a way to sift through your artwork easily.

Over time you might get interested in automation for Adobe Illustrator as scripts, actions, and batches, and then the power of your file organization system will come in handy big time :)

As a bonus, I created a PDF for you to easier copy and paste the names of the files if you decide to use my system if naming. You can download it here.

What to do if you can’t work at your home office for a few days. How to turn it into an opportunity – Video

A few weeks ago, my home office art studio was not available for 10 work days as our roof was beeing repaired after the heavy rains. I use iMac and Wacom Intuos for my work setup to do my freelance textile design projects so I couldn’t take them to a coffee shop. I decided to go to the local library instead and to study marketing as I felt that I wanted to spend some time studying a new level for my business. This was a perfect opportunity! :)

Every day I packed a lunch for myself and went to the library to read books about marketing. I got two books:

1) a physical copy of Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World* by Gary Vaynerchuk

2) The Sell: The Secrets of Selling Anything to Anyone by Fredrik Eklund* – audiobook

As I walked for 1 hour to the library every day, I listened to The Sell audiobook and really enjoyed it. It talks a lot about personal brand, taking care of yourself, confidence, and marketing. I found the tone and the message to be very inspiring.

How I Grew My Textile Design Business By 200x In 2 Years – Video

Here is a story of my textile design and repeat pattern business and what I learned in the process…

My name is Oksana. I am an artist, textile designer and a creative soul.

Up to this point I created more than 5000 vector repeat patterns and worked on more than 50 freelance surface pattern design projects.

I created my first pattern ever in 2010 and it has changed my life forever. Before this happened, I was creating vector illustrations approximately once per week for my microstock online galleries, where they could be licensed. One day in 2010 I told my husband Alex that I really liked repeat pattern designs and wanted to make them in vector, but the technical process of creating them was very time consuming and long. So Alex told me “Let’s figure it out together!” and we did! We put our heads together and came up with a system that made the technical side of creating repeat patterns very easy and fast for me. We improved the system over the years, but that day we made a simple pattern. Here it is. I was so excited to use it somehow that I made this illustration. One of my personal favorites till this day.

One year later, I have created over 1000 repeat patterns and borders and the revenue from my microstock business grew 80 times in one year. The following year we reached 200x the revenue of my original microstock business. You might say that it all started from that first pattern, but what I learned in 6 years since that day, is that it started from an idea and the fact that me and my husband came together and collaborated. That was one of the best, exciting times in our lives together.

I realized that I have a vision for patterns and artwork that speak to people and inspire them. But the power comes in collaboration with other amazing, creative people. This is what my customers have taught me so much through our common design projects.
If you have a product or a vision for a product that will impact people’s lives for better, I would be honored to collaborate with you and create unique, amazing artwork specifically for your products based on my creative vision and more that 8 years of experience in art and design. Please email me and let’s talk about your products and how we can make creative, meaningful magic happen together…

Video: My Yankee Doodle Animation Project

Hi, my dear readers! Sorry for not posting regularly, but recent exciting changes in our life take up most of my time and energy :) I will talk about it a bit later… For now let me share my excitement about my first animation project!!! Yay! :)

Yankee Doodle went to town
Riding on a pony;
He stuck a feather in his hat,
And called it macaroni.

As you can see from the video, I worked with Eflashapps and their animation team on creating this cute little video for a very famous nursery rhyme Yankee Doodle. I was familiar with this song and always liked the melody, so I became very excited to create a storyboard and character design to illustrate this fun kids song.

Here is my sketch of the scene where Yankee Doodle dances with the Girl.

And here is the final colored art for character design in vector format:

I surely did have a lot of fun with this little animation. I hope you and your kids will enjoy watching and singing along to this video.

I’d love to know what you think about my first try in animation genre :) Please let me know in the comments!

Video: Adorable Little Girl And My Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Book

I can’t tell you how excited I was to discover this little video on Facebook yesterday!!! :) It shows a cute little girl looking at illustrations in my Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star book and singing the Twinkle song. ADORABLE!!!

For those who don’t  know yet, I illustrated this book a while ago. It was published by Flowerpot Press and it has just come out for sale in United States. So happy to see such a great feedback from this adorable reader… and singer ;) I believe this is the best kind of feedback you can get!

Many thanks to little girl’s Mom, Meredith, for sharing this video with us. And a special thanks to my dear friend, Jessica, who has purchased my book on Amazon as a gift for her sweet niece, the star of this video! Meredith emailed me that Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star book is her daughter’s new favorite. She wrote:

“My littlest one took the book to bed with her and she brought it to me first thing this morning to read.”

How adorable is that!? :) This makes me really happy!

Video: Amazing Nature: Thousands of Monarch Butterflies

Today I want to share a little bit of the beauty that we see every day in Santa Barbara… It is full of nature gems and here is one of the most exciting ones: monarch butterflies migration.
Every winter thousands of beautiful monarch butterflies migrate to Coronado Butterfly Preserve in Goleta, California. It is an amazing experience to see them in clusters on eucalyptus trees at the Elwood grove. Coronado is the largest Monarch butterfly over-wintering groves in California. 2012-2013 butterfly season Alex and I are lucky enough to live just a couple of minutes away from this natural treasure. So beautiful!

Monarch butterflies can not survive cold winters, so they travel in masses up to 3000 miles to small groves along the California coast. How lucky are we to be able to see these spectacular creatures…

Video and photography by Alex Mikhnenko, my husband. Editing by me.

Here is my recent butterfly seamless pattern design inspired by this little wonder. I hope little traveling butterflies come again next year…

Video: Colorful Dress Up

Once I received proof swatches of my fabric designs from my Spoonflower

shop, I became very excited to feature them in a video. Well, they ended up to be a new wardrobe for my little stick figure. To be honest, I always thought it was a “boy stick figure”, but it ended up to be a girl ;) Seeing all of these tiny dresses and the real size Strawberry dress made by Vivat Veritas makes me want one of my own…

Do wear clothes with patterns on them or you prefer solid colors? I like both now, but I used to wear less patterns before I started designing them :)

Video: I Moved To California

Long time no see!

Hello again and greetings from Santa Barbara, California!!! :) Alex and I moved here in March and we plan to stay for a while. During the last couple of months we’ve been settling in our new place, looking around and enjoying the wonderful weather… It is definitely much more hard for me to stay at my computer with the weather this great, hence the lack of updates from me ;) But I finally got my work authorization for the USA and ready to get back to work.

How are you guys doing?

Hugs! Oksancia
